How GST is Calculated: Mathematical Formulas
Depending on whether the original product price is quoted exclusive or inclusive of taxes, two different statutory mathematical formulas apply:
1. GST Exclusive (Adding GST to Base Price)
Used when the seller quotes a net price before tax and adds GST onto the bill:
GST Amount = Net Amount × (GST Rate / 100)
Total Gross Amount = Net Amount + GST Amount
Total Gross Amount = Net Amount + GST Amount
2. GST Inclusive (Extracting GST from Gross Price)
Used for Maximum Retail Price (MRP) products or total contractor bills to find the base taxable value:
Net Taxable Amount = Gross Amount / (1 + (GST Rate / 100))
GST Amount = Gross Amount - Net Taxable Amount
GST Amount = Gross Amount - Net Taxable Amount
Practical Example
Scenario: You sell consulting services for ₹50,000 within Maharashtra at an 18% GST rate.
- Net Base Price: ₹50,000
- Total GST (18%): ₹50,000 × 0.18 = ₹9,000
- CGST Split (9%): ₹4,500 (remitted to Central Government)
- SGST Split (9%): ₹4,500 (remitted to Maharashtra State Government)
- Final Invoice Value: ₹59,000
Frequently Asked Questions
When goods or services are supplied within the same state (Intra-state), the total tax is split equally between CGST (Central Government) and SGST (State Government). When supply takes place between two different states (Inter-state), Integrated GST (IGST) is levied and collected by the Central Government, which subsequently apportions the destination state's share.
Yes. Under the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, the Maximum Retail Price (MRP) printed on packaged consumer goods in India must be inclusive of all taxes, including GST. Retailers cannot add extra GST at the cash counter on top of the MRP.
